Special Olympics Northern California
Allotment and Athlete Selection Procedures
Revised
The allotment distribution procedure was implemented in an effort to provide equitable competition opportunities for all athletes for Special Olympics Northern California (SONorCal) State/Chapter events. This will help ensure that each area/county is given a fair percentage of allotments based on total participation numbers.
State/Chapter (Championship) Games Eligibility Criteria
- Athletes must have a current Athlete Application on file that is valid through the State/Chapter Games.
- Athletes must be listed on the seasonal Sport Roster by the final deadline.
- Athletes/teams must attend a minimum of 50% of scheduled practices prior to the Regional competition.
- Athletes/teams must have participated in a Regional competition.
- Athletes must be confirmed by their Program as being fit to adhere to the Athlete Code of Conduct and withstand the added travel and housing requirements that may arise at a State/Chapter Games.
Allotment & Athlete Selection Procedures
Areas/Counties are tasked with the responsibility of allocating equitable allotments within its local programs, taking into consideration the following factors:
- Ensuring that the athlete/team meets eligibility criteria outlined above.
- Evaluating the total participation numbers, by sport, within all programs within the area/county and allocating allotments accordingly based on these numbers.
- Selecting qualified athletes based on merit (gold medalists first, followed by silver and bronze) to fill out allotment.
- Selecting qualified athletes who have not previously or recently participated, over those who have recently or repeatedly participated.
Head of Delegation (HOD)/Additional HOD Allotment Procedures
HOD slots will be allotted equitably based on the size of each collective delegation. Each delegation will automatically receive 1 HOD, then will be allotted 1 additional HOD for every 40 athletes after that (i.e., <40 athletes = 1 HOD; 41-80 athletes = 2 HODs; 81+ athletes = 3 HODs).
