Be a Coach

The leaders, teachers and ultimate supporters for Special Olympics athletes

Coaching Special Olympics

Special Olympics Northern California coaches bring enthusiasm, commitment and a positive attitude to each practice, event and competition. They enrich the lives of athletes in many life-changing ways and instill skills and confidence that athletes can use to succeed in school, get a job and find confidence in social situations and in life.

Coaches also get a lot in return. They build meaningful relationships with athletes and their families and become inspired by their perseverance in the face of numerous obstacles. By teaching and learning from athletes, coaches gain a new perspective in their own lives that helps to create more inclusive communities.

NEW for 2024!  Be a Team Assistant. If you are interested in supporting a team in your area, but cannot commit to a coaching role, consider becoming a Team Assistant. Read more below.

Who Are Our Coaches?

Could YOU be a Special Olympics coach?

The short answer… probably yes! Our coaches come from all walks of life. They are parents, siblings, friends, teachers, sport professionals and more. Even if you have limited experience with intellectual disabilities but are passionate about making an impact, we will provide the necessary training and resources to make it a rewarding experience – both for the athletes and for you.

Head and assistant coaches must be at least 14 years old and complete an application, background check (for those 18+) and online orientation.

Inspire & Be Inspired

Coaches teach the skills, attitude, values and spirit that define a true athlete. They are role models and character-builders both on and off the field of play.

Coaching Special Olympics is incredibly awesome and rewarding. I love walking into practice and being greeted by smiles and hugs; and watching athletes blossom as they learn new skills and sports.
